Detroit Public Schools owes $18 million for unpaid custodial work, company says

Staffing company Sodexo said it intends to stop performing work for Detroit Public Schools because the district owes it more than $18 million.

The district, meanwhile, says the company has failed to live up to the terms of its contract and has not kept schools clean.

More than 400 workers will be affected, including 359 custodial workers, Sodexo said in a required federal layoff notice it filed with the Michigan Workforce Development Agency. It was not immediately clear late Tuesday whether those people will actually lose their jobs. The company has provided building maintenance and custodial services to the district since 2011.
